Local Hire and Training
Suulutaaq has a very successful track record for hiring and training of local individuals or employing qualifi ed local subcontractors. Suulutaaq’s local hiring practice provides current and future benefi ts to the local community by reinvesting the project money back into the local economy. and by providing training to develop both technical and management skills for local people. This provides a win-win situation for the local community and the contractor. Selecting Suulutaaq as engineer/contractor, guarantees maximum local cooperation for obtaining project goals. Involving local leaders in pre-project planning and local hire, fosters good relations leading to successful project completion and cooperation in environmentally sensitive projects. Some examples of this win-win success are listed here.

• St. Lawrence Island Building Demolition. Based on recommendations from the Tribal Council, selected local residents were offered training in hazardous materials and asbestos abatement. Most training was conducted in the community. Equipment operators were flown to Anchorage for specialized training on the equipment they would be operating. Subsequent to training, the operators and laborers were employed on the project. Approximately $1 million of the $1.5 million project payroll was reinvested in the local economy. As a result of the local training and participation, the community was comfortable with the corrective action results.
• North and South Barrel Bluffs, King Salmon, Alaska. Over 100 residents in King Salmon received 40-hour hazardous materials training to enable them to work on the project. Approximately 80% of the 32 project employees were subsequently hired. This project received recognition by being awarded the first ever award from the Secretary of the Air Force for “Environmental Excellence” thus dispelling the myth that local people lack the capability to successfully complete projects.
